The Best Student Bars In Liverpool

Liverpool is hailed as one of the best cities in the UK for students, and there are plenty of good reasons to back it up. It’s home to some great universities, it’s a pretty sociable city, and it has some of the best nightlife around. Whether you’re in search of cheap shots, or a more sophisticated atmosphere – Liverpool has got you covered.

We’ve decided to outline our favourite spots in the city, where you and your friends can get together for a drink or two (or six, or 10… it’s up to you really – almost everywhere is open late).

The Font

If you’re already studying in liverpool, then you’ll be familiar with the student haven that is The Font. It’s the home of the £2 cocktail, sticky floors, and some great quiz nights. Whether you’re going for an after-lecture drink or you’re just starting a big night out, The Font is the perfect place for drinking on a student budget.

Located just a 10- to 15-minute walk from our Cathedral Campus accommodation, The Font is also a short distance from the rest of the locations on this list – bar crawl, anyone?

The Hope and Anchor

Two minutes down the road from The Font you’ll find The Hope and Anchor. This bar is a firm favourite for students at Liverpool John Moores due to its close proximity to the Aldham Robarts Library – perfect for a pint after you’ve put in the hours studying. Although it’s not quite as cheap as The Font, this bar has an impressive points system, whereby you can build up enough rewards points for free drinks in no time at all.

Here you can take advantage of the daily offers on food and drink that run throughout the week. Expect promotions like Wings Wednesday, where you can feast on chicken for as little as 25p per wing!

The Shipping Forecast

Right in the heart of Liverpool city centre, The Shipping Forecast is a perfect drinking spot for any day of the week. It operates as a normal bar on the weekends, so you might find that through the week it’s a bit more student-friendly.

Its basement area is home to several club nights, including the infamous Juicy, where every Tuesday night The Shipping Forecast is transformed into a space for all things R&B. This is perfect if you’re looking for a midweek night out, because you can expect cheap drinks and a good atmosphere – there’s always a few sore heads on Wednesday morning.

The Merchant

A couple of years ago, the building where you can now find one of Liverpool’s coolest bars was due to be demolished – that was until The Merchant appeared. This bar offers an incredibly versatile space: perfect for dates in the early evening, and a great night out after midnight. If you’re into your gin, then this is the place for you, with a never-ending offer, where you can buy one and get one for £1 – ideal for the student budget.

Here you’ll find plenty of events to keep you entertained throughout the week. Expect quizzes covering just about any theme – from The Simpsons to Alan Partridge – and a range of club nights covering your favourite artists. You’re guaranteed to be entertained.

McCooleys

McCooleys – a firm freshers’ favourite. If you’re an existing student, you’ve probably experienced this bar in all of its glory: perpetually busy, and easy on the wallet. There is something truly endearing about the city’s least-Irish Irish bar, maybe because it’s the first point of contact with Liverpool nightlife for many students.

It’s easy for you to spend the whole night here, with live music in the evenings and a busy atmosphere into the early hours. McCooleys is right in the centre of town, with plenty of food choices in the surrounding area for when you need that kebab on the way home.
