Bristol is one of those cities that’s incredibly easy to fall in love with. After being named the best place to live in the UK, it’s no surprise that it attracts people from all over the country. If you choose to study here you’ll become an honorary Bristolian in no time, and we can almost guarantee that by the end of your course you’ll find it difficult to leave – and rightly so, with its picturesque setting and outstanding nightlife, what’s not to love?
We like it so much that we’ve decided to outline our favourite spots in the city where you and your friends can get together for a couple of drinks.
Thekla
A bar on a boat. Do we need to say any more? That’s right: you don’t have to jet off to Magaluf if you want to party on water. Thekla is a former cargo ship moored in the Mud Dock area of Bristol’s floating harbour. When it was built in Germany in 1958, the owners probably had no idea that it would go on to be the venue for some of Bristol’s best gigs and events.
There’s always something on at Thekla, but the most student-friendly event is on a Thursday. The club night is called Pressure, and you can expect alternative music and indie vibes along with some great drinks offers. Get down before 10 and you’ll get in for free – it fills up fast, so the earlier the better.
Brewdog
Brewdog is the place to go in Bristol if you’re into trying new beers – ideal for the craft-ale aficionado. If you’ve had enough of the usual student routine, this bar will be perfect for you. Here you can swap the shots for the hops, and start a long-lasting romance with craft beers.
If you’re thinking that Brewdog is a little over the student budget, don’t worry, because they listened to the requests of the people and started offering 15% student discount.
It’s also worth keeping an eye out on social media for local promotions. At the start of February, Brewdog Bristol was offering a free drink to anyone dressed as Elvis – it’s never been easier for you to acquire a burning love for beer.
The Anchor
This bar is one for the sports fans. With nine screens, The Anchor is the place to go to watch your favourite team play. It’s part of the same chain that Liverpool’s Hope and Anchor belongs to, so you can expect plenty of student-friendly deals, including the famous Wings Wednesday, where you can feast on chicken for just 25p per wing!
If you’re in the Gloucester Road area before a night out, then The Anchor will be the ideal drinking spot for you. We recommend heading down on a Thursday, when it hosts a night especially for students – with pints from as little as £1.50, you can’t go wrong.
Kongs of King Street
Located just a 20-minute walk from our Hotwells House accommodation, Kongs is a must-visit if you’re living in Bristol. This is one of the quirkier drinking spots that the city has to offer. It’s a retro-themed bar that has an impressive selection of games from the 80s and 90s, so you and your friends can enjoy a game of ping-pong, foosball, or get competitive over classic arcade games like Pac-Man.
The Full Moon
Your first few months of uni take place through the winter, which means you grow accustomed to the cosier drinking spots around town. However, when the sun starts to shine, you’ll probably find that you’re scratching your head asking, “Where’s the best beer garden?” Don’t worry, because The Full Moon will be your go-to spot for an outdoor drink.
Located right at the bottom of Stokes Croft, this place isn’t limited to just student clientele. The bar is attached to a backpacker hostel, meaning you’ll have the opportunity to meet plenty of people from all over the world.
