Bristol is known for being an incredibly student-friendly city. With different neighbourhoods to suit every type of student, an incredible food scene and an abundance of outdoor space, it’s no surprise that many choose to call Bristol home while they study. But with over 25,000 students in the city, you might one who prefers to take your studies off campus.
This is why we’ve put together a list of some of our favourite alternative working spots in Bristol for you to check out, see which one fits your study style.
Arnolfini
This international art centre isn’t short of people getting on with a bit of work, and we can see why. It sits in an incredibly scenic location, so when you aren’t focusing on your studies, it will be easy to lose yourself watching the boats passing by. Open from nine through the week and centrally located, it’s close to everything including the university campus (which is just a 15- to 20-minute walk away).
You can refuel throughout the day with their delicious selection of cakes and sandwiches, take in a bit of local culture on your study breaks with one of their free exhibitions, or make the most of their specialist bookshop – you might never have to go to the library again. Where better to take your studies than a space dedicated to educating the local community?
The Canteen
If you’re a Bristolian, you’re probably already familiar with The Canteen. A firm favourite amongst students, this space is a good study spot if you can find a seat. If you find that you work well in a buzzing atmosphere then park yourself here for the day and take advantage of their good food at good prices. With two Bristol Good Food Awards under their belt and a charming simplicity to the interior, it’s no surprise that The Canteen is a Bristol institution.
Bristol Central Library
Okay, we know you probably don’t want to spend your day in a library when you could be in an exciting art centre or a trendy cafe – but hear us out. There’s a reason why Central Library is a popular revision spot for students; its marble staircase and huge windows make this a grade 1 listed building and perhaps one of the most beautiful spots to study in the city.
One of the perks of it being a library is that it has plenty of books to help you with your revision and good facilities for you to do your work. If you find that you need complete silence to work, then Central Library is your place – with a quiet upstairs reading room where you’ll mostly find final-year students powering through their dissertations. Central is just a 15-minute walk away from our Hotwells House accommodation, making it one of the most accessible options on this list for our tenants.
Boston Tea Party
Wherever you are in Bristol, you’ll probably find that you are within walking distance of a Boston Tea Party. That’s right: this is a popular chain of coffee shops, and with six locations in Bristol, it’s no surprise that this is a popular study spot for students.
We like the Park Street shop – formerly a record store, it has a vintage feel with comfortable sofas where you can base yourself for the day while you study. Another favourite of ours can be found on Whiteladies Road; with a hidden tiered garden and amazing views over Bristol, this is a great place to take your revision when the weather picks up a bit. Get there early if you want a seat – these unique cafes get really busy around lunchtime.
